Feeling real good

Back in October I recieved a note from Susan at Aromantic UK (a supplier), here is her note.

As you may know, Aromantic will be exhibiting at the camexpo in London next weekend. I just noticed today that they are launching a new award this year, The CAM Outstanding Achievement Award, which, according to their website, is: “The ultimate recognition that can be bestowed on an individual who has made a truly outstanding contribution to the Complementary and Natural Therapy Industry. The Award will be presented at the industry’s most prestigious event, camexpo, which takes place at Earls Court on the 24-25 October.”

I have secretly nominated and voted for Kolbjorn and I would love to surprise Kolbjorn with as many nominations from his customers and friends as we can get in for him. So, if you feel he has inspired you and made a difference to the industry, I’m asking you to nominate him also. Of course, Kolbjorn knows nothing about this, so please don’t say anything to him until the Award has been presented. You can see what I wrote in support of his nomination below the link to the quick and easy online voting form on camexpo’s website.

Well we voted for Kolbjorn amongst many other people out there and guess what he won. Wow. total wow.

Here is a pic of him recieving the award.

Here is what we wrote when we voted for him.

Kolbjorn has made a huge difference to many, right down to the smallest snippet of information. He is forever tirelessly sharing information, researching the latest ingredient trends, providing workshops, access to ingredients and written information. Without Kolbjorn’s dedication many people would never have had the opportunity to make their own healthy cosmetics or grow their passion to become successful businesses. It is his inspiration that has helped many of us. Keep up the good work, cheers from Australia.

Sometimes I feel I am writing to myself but for those reading the blog anonymously thanks for taking the time out of your day or night, you may see no comments publicly but there are a lot in private.
I have one very special friend who is presently in hospital on the other side of the world and I am glad to hear the cupcakes put a smile on your face. I am thinking of you, get well quickly. I hope your turn comes around again to use the hospital laptop computer real soon.

Organic and Bio-dynamic the way of the future

I have had an interesting couple of days, quite enjoyable actually when someone is very genuine and really wants to learn. Today I ended up talking to a lady for 2 or more hours on the phone, it was a wonderful conversation and I will share some snippets.

It all basically started off with one question through our website.
Do you use lye in your soap?

When I see questions like this I kind of shake my head and go oh no another person who's been bitten by the misinformed marketing hype that get's around from time to time. It seems to go in waves or stages each year, makes me smile when I read stuff like this.

Well you see I proceeded to explain to this wonderful lady all about how soap could not be soap without caustic soda or lye. It's just not possible because you have no soap without it. This lye and oil business is basic chemistry and I am not going to go into the soapmaking process here. But I can assure anyone out there that there is no lye left in a properly made bar of soap which has been formulated correctly. This is why a lot of soapmakers don't list it on the ingredients list, because people misunderstand it.

Our conversation then in further emails drifted onto Organic and soapmaking processes, commercial soap manufacturers and the processes their style of soap goes through, how the glycerin is stripped from the soap powder or noodle when it is saponified and the whole process from woe to go and onto things like tree ash or wood ash in place of lye, another marketing tact that's out there. In this day and age if someone uses wood ash to get lye for all the soap their business makes I will eat my hat. Soooo labour intensive it's plain crazy.

Then later we started talking about the Organic thing and how everyone is heading towards organic, the pitfalls for buyers to watch out for in clever sneaky or what ever one would like to call it marketing.

I am too much about the pretty to ever be organic, I always use the very best ingredients that I can source but the kind of soap I make, Organic is not possible for me. This is why on my website on most things I have listed the % natural because I don't consider things like Oxides, Ultramarines, Dyes, Pigments, food colour or cosmetic colour to be natural. I like to be upfront as much as possible always, it saves problems later, well I think it does and I feel better inside myself as well.

Anyway we ended up talking about food and the taste, I mentioned about Bio-dynamic and this lady said to me honestly I had totally forgotten about Bio-dynamic. I thought forgotten OMG Bio-dynamic is totally awesome if you can get it, the taste is out there. In most instances the food is so much tastier, this is because the plants are stronger, healthier you name it. Mungali Creek bio-dynamic milk is yummo, their yogurt is delish and the cheese is ohhh I am just about drooling writing this. It's so divine and creamy, now I feel like some at this rediculous hour.

I ended up talking to her about Bio-dynamics and Dr Rudolf Steiners principles, what happens and what goes on. Following the moon phases, being in touch with nature, knowing your soil and plants, knowing what is happening below ground level. How the food soil web is working, if it is and how to help it work better for the plants nutrition and nitrogen uptake. We talked about nematodes, Mycorrhizal fungi inoculants, worms and all sorts. If you want better yield without things like NPK fertilizers check out Mycorrhiza, it's available in Australia now. Back when I had the nursery mine got seized by customs when I tried importing some so I didn't get it back then but that was at least 6 or more years ago.

This all brought back memories when I used to be a member of the Biodynamic Agriculture Australia back when I had the herb nursery before I made soap full time officially as a business. I followed some of Steiners principles, used horn manure, made manure teas, commercially composted, brewed all sorts of wonderful tonics for the nursery plants, sprayed things like crushed crystals to help the plants increase their photosynthesis production within the leaves.

If you want to increase your yeild in your vege gardens at home or improve your soil, get tastier produce from your garden, keep a better handle on pests and how to control them. I strongly suggest you go and have a serious look at biodynamics. I used biodynamic principles in my nursery an I noticed a vast improvement in no time. When we first moved to where we are now we had a bare block of dozed earth which was not suitable for growing things in the topsoil layer was missing, not even a worm to be found it was very disheartening. Within 18mths of working the soil and then moving to the biodynamic principles the difference could also be seen, people used to comment you must have one hell of a green thumb. There is no way I ever thought you would grow anything where you are it's horrible soil. Yes it is/was horrible but with some work and the right knowledge and guidance miracles can happen.

In some people's eyes it's a miracle to those who are into it, it's part of how things should be grown and it's part of being in touch with the plants, soil, energy fields and the elements .

For readers interested in Biodynamics keep reading to learn more about it.

Yep I know what some must be thinking by now. Oh yuck cow dung in a cow horn how gross. Honestly it really isn't the cow horn is reused. The prep 500 doesn't stink of cow poo, it smells real earthy. I thought the same thing in the beginning major yukko. But it isn't and your plants will thank you for it.

One day I might dig out my compost tea notes the things I used to make into tea for plants, some of that was just outright ferral in smell but the plants thrived on it. Maybe they got high on some of the brews, I don't know but they grew very well.

The following video shows horn manure prep 500 used on a commercial scale but can be used by hand vortex stirring at home for your vege patch or garden.

Rosnay, Rivers Road, Canowindra, NSW, Australia, is a vineyard and olive grove that has been Biodynamic for 12 years. This video shows the process of mixing and spraying the Biodynamic Preparation ...

If you want to know more go and check out  Biodynamic Agriculture Australia you can buy horn manure from them, learn farming techniques, do workshops and many other things.

this then is used in a spray on plants and soil. Plants love it.

Australia Post behind the scenes sorting your mail

We use Australia Post Eparcel Service, I came across this video clip and thought it was very interesting to see the equipment they use.

Have a look behind the scenes at Australia Post see the process your mail goes through.

The huge Australia Post trucks are all the time travelling on their way up to the top of Australia and back again, I see them quite regularly on the road.

I happened to bump into one of the drivers when getting served for petrol and I asked him a little about his truck and if he liked his job. He told me the trucks are state of the art, they are very comfortable to drive, the trucks are all satellite tracked and everything is at the drivers finger tips.

The trucks travel in pairs, so if you live up my way you will most likely see one then another if you are lucky, you can't miss them. I asked him if he had to wash the truck because they are always really clean and gleaming, a real good advertisement for Aust post. No part of his job is not to wash the truck, wow what a bonus. They are really big taut liner style trucks. The Aussie post people are very nice and polite to talk to, it's very refreshing to meet people who love their job.

International Christmas Ordering

This is a special note to all international shoppers, if you would like your order to arrive in time for Christmas, please order now. With the Express international service I feel we are still safe to say that goods will arrive in time for Christmas if ordered this week.

Orders placed after this week may not get held up in the post but could get held up on your end in Customs as they are going to be really under pressure with the massive volume that has to be processed at this time of year.

Wondering about how long it takes for a parcel to get to your country check out the link below and remember to add an extra 2-4 working days for customs and post office festive season chaos.

http://www1.auspost.com.au/international/ to look up your country and see how long, remember the service we use is Express Post International, none of the others because this is tracked. If I forget to sent you the tracking number please remind me to email it to you, that way you can watch it's progress online.

A special thank you to our wonderful international customers to mention just a couple we have people from the US, Japan and Accra Ghana who have ordered in the last week. You know who you are and thank you for choosing to shop with us out of the hundreds of thousands of bath and bodyshops online. We feel very privileged to serve you.

Check out the Australia Post Wednesday Video clip.

We have been really busy, how do I know this? All I have to do is look at how big our Australia post bill is and how many tonnes of product we have shipped out by looking at the manifests, total monthly weights shipped by us. I know for a fact that the delivery driver who picks up our freight from our local post office must groan some nights and mutter our name under their breath when there is a wall of big boxes staring at them. But I don't think it is that bad at least our freight smells good, I think that's a bonus in it's self.

Getting ready for the New Year 2010

I am still snowed under and battling with massive wholesale orders, not just me but all of us at Platypus Dreams. All website orders are going out on time so not need for online shoppers to worry, there maybe delays of 1-2 days pre shipping but I am pushing to keep this down to a minimum.

To keep my sanity I have started working on some of our new range of products which will be only available to our retail customers who shop online. I am working on new goodies in my hours that I have set aside as my relaxation time, creative time or non work time. This means time where I don't think about the orders, restocks or any other workings of the business, it is time where a normal person would sit and watch television, crochet, knit or read a book or go out and visit friends.
No I haven't lost the plot quite yet, maybe a sensory smell overload now and then from smelling too many wonderful fragrances. I have decided no matter what, come hell or high water I am having some zone out or me time. If I am not creating in my zone out time, be it new products, creating new graphics etc you may find some new posts on this blog about things which are not soap related, things that are spurred on by my day. Who knows what I will post about next, I will try to keep it interesting.

Here is a pic of one creation which is still in it's infancy and planning stages as part of a whole range of yummy treats which will really tempt.

I just love the pretty... it makes me smile when I make it

For some who read my blog be it soapmaker or some who would just like to know things. I have been thinking of some questions you may like to ask me but may not dare or want to because of various reasons in public. So here goes.

Was this easy to make? No it wasn't
Have you played with this soap style before? Kind of but not quite the same technique.
Is it the same ingredients in the topping as the bottom just like all your other soap? Yes it is, doing this technique certain oils have been suggested, I have found a way to make this work with any oils I choose. The main thing was not to use oils like, sunflower, ricebran or cheap stuff. I am happy I have discovered a new technique where we can use our standard blend which has the main ingredient as olive oil.
How many successful batches did you make? 2 batches the first was around 1kg for the topping, the second batch was around 7kg's of topping and I used our 25kg mixer for this. I think I could increase the batch size even more upto 10kg's if need be, this would make approx 20kg's in cubic volume of topping. I am thinking down the track another mixer maybe something that takes 30-50kg's would be good also, but then it is lifting equipment, bowl trolleys to move the bowl around. I am not too sure if bigger is better, time will tell.
Are you a pastry chef or cook, how did you learn to pipe things?  Any pastry chef could do this with their eyes closed? No I am not a pastry chef or cook. Some have said to me that it would be really easy for a pastry chef to make this kind of stuff. I don't necessarily think so. For a start this is a caustic product, not like whipped cream, caustic eats certain metals. The soap goes hard when it heats up, the topping won't pipe, it can go gluggy really easily as quick as counting from 1-5, or it can go runny as well if the temperature is not right or too much time is taken. So many things to consider, cooking is all about looks and taste. Soap is about many other things, like is the product good on the skin, does it feel good, will it keep over time and not get yellow spot or go rancid. Will the product discolour with age? What shelf life and conditions will it stand up to. Will it keep it's fragrance and not morph into something horrible with time. I feel making really good soap is not something that one can slap together like whipping up some cream, adding a bit of vanilla and piping it on the top of a cake. There is one hell of a lot more to it.
Was it time consuming? Yes it was
Is this why you are not going to sell product like this wholesale? Yes, also because I find making thousands of the one item as close to identical as possible drives me crazy.
Did you have any failures to get to this point? Yes you don't want to see my bin, I would say 6-8kg's of soap destined for the tip. Quite sure the tip attendant goes dumpster diving after we dump rubbish from our workshop. Because our rubbish smells ohhh so good.
Why don't you rebatch the waste soap? Don't have the time or inclination to do it, limited me time. lol
Is it messy to clean up? Hell yeah, I need a dish slave. The automatic dishwasher does not like raw soap.
Are you happy with the final product? Time will tell, I am my own product critic and sometimes I am too fickle about things. Arh can't help it. Have to maintain as high a standard as possible always and be proud of my work.
